Don’t Ruin Anyone’s Game
Top 12 Disc Golf Etiquette Rules You Need to Know
by Celavirgie Bautista JUL 23, 2021
Disc golf etiquette is very important as it allows other disc golfers to enjoy their round while you have fun with yours, and everybody can move about in harmony.
If you’re new at disc golf, chances are you still don’t know what to do or how to act in certain situations. To save you from any blunder, we’ve written down twelve disc golf etiquette rules that you can take with you into the course.
BE MINDFUL OF THE CROWDS, YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY ONE PLAYING
1. For casual rounds, if your group is moving significantly slower than the group behind, offer to let them play through.
2. Keep your group to four or fewer at all times. If you must play in a group larger than four, please be mindful of the smaller groups behind and don’t hold up the players on the course.
3. Don’t play loud music on the course. While most players don’t mind people playing music, you have to keep the volume reasonable. Other players may not share your taste in music.
4. Don’t bring 5-10 putters with you to the practice basket. If possible, just bring two putters to practice with. That way, everyone can throw and collect the discs. No one needs to stand around and wait for you to finish putting and collecting all of your discs.
5. If you find a lost disc, attempt to return it because it’s the right thing to do. When there’s nothing to identify the disc owner, see if there are lost and found boxes on the course – these boxes exist for a reason.
6. If you decide to skip holes, make sure that there are no other players or groups that suddenly have to wait on you.
7. Don’t get the scores at the basket. There might be other players ready to throw but have to wait because your group huddle around the basket trying to remember your scores.
MAKE IT YOUR MISSION TO TAKE CARE OF THE COURSE
8. Don’t litter. Most disc golf courses have garbage cans. It’s not that hard to carry your trash with you until you find a trash receptacle. Better yet, bring your own plastic bag for trash.
9. Respect the course. Don’t graffiti the baskets, trees, tee signs, and benches. Never break any tree branches just to give yourself a better throw. Well-kept disc golf courses benefit all the members of the community.
REDUCE THE RISKS OF THROWING ON OTHER PEOPLE
10. Never throw at places you haven’t verified are clear. It’s common to yell “fore” if your disc is thrown in the direction of someone. On the other hand, if you’ve finished the hole, yell “clear” to signify you’re clear of the target area.
11. When dealing with non-players like regular park users, they might not even know what “fore” means. Use “heads up” or “watch out” because they are a lot recognizable to them.
12. Learn the rules and of the game. If you’re planning to join a group of more experienced players, it’s best to know the basics of how to play disc golf. Also, don’t forget to learn disc golf lingo. Some people say that playing sports can reveal someone’s personality so you should be on your best behavior.
Respect the sport. Respect the course. Respect your bros.
